The Ramayana: A Storytelling Weekend

The Ramayana

with Allison Dennis

September 21 – 23

Friday: 7:00-9:00pm

Kirtan interspersed with stories introducing the characters and back-story of The Ramayana.

Saturday: 1:30-6:30pm

Predominantly focusing on Tulasi Das’s translation with tid-bits from the Valmiki version; epic stories of the adventures of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. We’ll also go through the esoteric meaning of the stories, essentially, The Ramayana is happening within you. Each character is an aspect of your being, and we all face our own Ravana (demon king) that must be conquered in order to experience truth and freedom. Kirtan will be interspersed.

Sunday: 1:30-5:30pm

Today’s focus will be on a gem of a translation written by a Bengali woman is the 16th century, Candravati. We’ll read parts of her story together which focuses exclusively on Sita and her journey and unsung struggles as a woman. Candravati omits all the regular tales we’ve grown accustomed to, the fanfare for Ram and his duty as a King in exile, the warring masculine forces, and instead focuses on a simple woman who loved her man to the end. Kirtan will be interspersed.

Sliding Scale $160 – $320 for entire event, or $15 – $30 per hour
