Private Sessions:

ombluesky@gmail.com. 919 929 8961. Rates are sliding scale. Sessions are one hour. Thursdays – Sundays.

Astrology: $50-75 – The moment you were born all the planets of our solar system were exactly somewhere; and all of the celestial bodies, their placement, and their relationship to each other have meaning that’s passed down through various ages and evolved over time. Perhaps subtlety was easier to grasp in ancient times with less noise, less artificial light, less technology? And perhaps the symbols can serve as a language for further understanding and deeper insight as we evolve?

Massage Therapy: $90-120 per hour. $120-150 for 90 minutes. NC LMBT #6786 – A graduate of The Body Therapy Institute, specializing in Myofascial Deep Tissue and relaxing Swedish Massage; Allison can be of sincere help for limited mobility, injury, and recovery. Having suffered a back injury herself (herniated disc, L5) she has a keen understanding of chronic pain and the accompanying emotional tightness that often results from long term physical pain. Most of Allison’s continuing education has been around deepening her commitment to ethical standards and communication.

Private Yoga: $70-100 – E-RYT 500 and RYS 500 – There’s no conversion, no fundamentalism, and no dogma in Allison’s approach. She teaches prescriptively based on the individual student as opposed to teaching from any sort of pre-existing template. Breath, daily practice, and study are primary to her approach as a teacher and as a student of yoga.

Bio:

My practice is a daily joy of breathing, moving, and being where I am, where ever I am. Without a steady practice it’s very difficult to be an effective yoga teacher, and it’s my very good fortune to have stumbled onto teachers who patiently led me closer to that truth. I hope to help students find their own yoga, their own way, and their authentic voice in the world.

My asana teaching style is vinyasa krama based, so I tend to call fluid movements connected with breath in a sequence that is improvised based on who shows up and how we all show up. I rely heavily on intuition and experience.

I’ve been fascinated by the Sanskrit language since my first exposure back in the 90’s, and I study its’ pronunciation and meaning in earnest. In chanting for classes and leading kirtan my aim is to create sattva, or the vibration of ease. I’m not performative or result oriented about it.

In terms of teaching philosophy and the science of yoga in the training programs; I work well with sincere students who are willing to be uncomfortable and look silence, loss, beauty, and chaos in the eye. Students who have potential to blossom despite the difficulties of life and have the gumption to do what is necessary to cultivate a fertile ground. Discipline is essential, as is a devotional attitude to something more profound than the small ego self. Information is given with tradition and evolution in mind, and aside from hatha yoga, I teach primarily from the six Indian darshanas.

History:

As a child I loved dirt, animals, star-gazing, reading dictionaries, quiet places and making up songs. I was a gymnast with tough coaches who helped me develop bulletproof resiliency, and when about nine, spent a summer with olympic coach Bela Karolyi. Ultimately I quit gymnastics for cheer-leading and boys.

High school show choir led to studying Sanford Meisner’s method to acting with Don Biehn. I practiced reading behavior and responding from my internal compass as he coached us to “be a leaf in the wind”.  A group of 14 of us took the two-year journey, and being so young (19-21), it was like an emotional intelligence boot-camp where crying was applauded and anger was encouraged.

I moved to NYC for the Broadway Stage when I was in my early twenties but ended up working full time as a personal trainer living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Once cast in the Off Broadway hit De La Guarda, I stayed with the production for two years and in it found a canvas for deep vulnerable expression with a tribe of warriors to play with; again about 14 people. I ran on walls, played in the (indoor) rain, and went home with a wet head every night on the L train until a back injury took me out of the show.

During the years of my Saturn return  I was in recovery from the herniated disc injury and spent a lot of time alone reading and playing guitar. I traveled across the country and up and down the east coast writing and singing songs in various dimly lit rooms, eventually producing three albums of original music. When I landed in Woodstock, NY I lived a block away from a yoga studio, and after becoming a regular practitioner, signed up for a yoga teacher training.

Now over a decade later, aside from fumbling around as a business owner, I primarily focus on leading long term yoga teacher training programs which both serves the community and feeds an inner compulsion to study and learn more about this Indian approach to understanding and relating to consciousness itself. Both programs, the 200 and 300 hour, were created at the request of student, friend, and teacher Katherine Desrochers and I’m so grateful to her for this call to action! I’m currently developing a third course at the request of my dear teachers K. Sridhar and Prem Sadasivananda which will be exclusively for graduates of the Veda Vinyasa 300 hour program.

In 2017 I took a two month pilgrimage to India and brought back with me a broader context for the Indian knowledge systems and a deepened commitment to teaching and story-telling. I’m currently enrolled in a four year Vedic Astrology program and also studying Ayurveda. I’m grateful to be part of the wonder that is Heart of Yoga School and am ever eager to share sincere yoga here in the West.
